In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton set off aboard the ship Endurance on an expedition to be the first to cross Antarctica. In recruitment, Shackleton advertised, “Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.” He would not be wrong. Tragedy struck early when their ship was crushed between drifting ice flows and sank before ever reaching Antarctica. Despite the odds, Shackleton led his men on a harrowing two-year saga with all souls ultimately rescued. His story inspires us as to what is possible through strong leadership, teamwork, and absolute commitment.
